I Am an MD and Health Coach. Perimenopause Weight Gain Still Changed My Body.
I am a medical doctor, a certified health coach, and I follow a whole food plant based diet. I have spent years coaching women through weight loss and metabolic health. Perimenopause still caught me off guard.

What perimenopause weight gain actually feels like
I gained weight I could not explain through diet alone. I lost muscle I had spent years building. My energy dropped, and for a while I felt like a fraud, because I am the person people come to for answers about weight loss and menopause symptoms, and I did not have one for myself.
Perimenopause is a hormone shift, not a willpower problem
Here is what changed everything for me. I stopped treating perimenopause weight gain as a personal failure and started treating it as what it actually is, a hormonal transition with measurable effects on metabolism, muscle, and fat storage. This is not about eating less or trying harder. It is about understanding what your hormones are doing and adjusting your approach to match.

What this series covers
This post is the first in a series where I walk through what happens to a woman's body during perimenopause and menopause, combining my medical background with my own real time experience. Coming posts cover the hormonal changes behind common symptoms, why muscle loss and weight gain happen even with good habits, the hormone replacement therapy conversation I had with my own doctor, updated protein needs, strength training, cardio, supplements, and the sleep and stress piece that ties it all together.
If you are in your forties or fifties and your body stopped responding to what used to work, you are not broken and you are not lazy. You are going through a transition most of us were never taught how to manage, and there is a clear path forward.
